All educators are welcome to join us for a 4 hour hands-on and experiential learning opportunity! The session will be geared towards high school chemistry teachers; however, the information could be applied to any science classroom. During the four hours, teachers can expect to learn more about implementing NGSS in their chemistry classrooms. This will include conversations about using phenomena to guide learning and facilitating student-led discussions through the integration of the Science & Engineering Practices (SEPs). The day will be focused on teachers actively participating in the Design Thinking process to develop a solution to a problem within the world of chemistry. This process attends to the Nature of Science (NGSS Practices, Cross-Cutting Concepts, and Disciplinary Core Ideas) and is the process of innovation utilized in chemistry-based industries and research labs. Participants will walk away with an activity that could be used in their own classroom and/or modified to work in many classroom settings. We will also discuss existing tools for the classroom and further professional development opportunities. Educators may qualify for 1-2 graduate credits ($150/cr) through the University of Iowa with an additional (8.5-21 hrs) of curriculum planning and implementation. Can’t wait to see you there!
